Hi, im going to buy alot of gear from cliffhanger which is located in Melbourne, and you get 20% off if you are a member of their club/go climbing there.

So I was just wondering, because i am not a member, what are the members details? Do they know your address? Because it says

"Any Cliffhanger / VCC Member discounts will be applied after we've verified your details"

So just wondering if I could use someones membership card detail/number or would this not work because they cross-reference it?

This must go down as one of the best first posts ever posted in Chockstone. Good luck sunshine.

The owner of cliffhanger reads chockstone as do some of the staff, so they're more than likely aware that you're thinking about scamming the system.

If you are spending more than $330 (or $247.50 if you're a concession), you'd more than cover the cost of a VCC membership with the discount you get and should just join the club for the year.

If you're going to buy "alot of gear" I suggest you buy it from the US. Lots of topics talking about it...have a look.
...cue a discussion on pros and cons of buying stuff from overseas, not supporting local stores etc.

Which raises the question -- how many, if any, overseas retail suppliers would offer to financially support THIS website if the current local sponsor felt it was no longer commercially worthwhile?

Hmm.. its just annoying how you are paying a huge premium just to buy things over here, but if you get ALOT of things from US or what ever, then the postage starts getting expensive.

For a carabiner I could get for 12 pounds in England (19AU)

costs 45AU here.

Look, im sure that every e-tailer and shop in Australia should recognize that WE are the consumer buying their products. There is nothing wrong with just trying to seek out the cheapest price possible. And yeah sure you can support them, which is what i'd like to do.

And yes, they give you a 20% discount if your a member, just remember that they are never losing money by giving you a 20% discount.

They make a profit on the original sale price (lets say 30% for example.)
If you are member, "free" discount, 20% off. So that's still 10% profit. Basic business here. :/

And that justifies paying well over the odds for gear? Maybe each time we buy stuff from overseas we should donate some cash to chockstone? To be fair I think rockhardware does a very good job, and makes efforts to be price competitive. I have therefore purchased stuff from there before...but just when the quantity doesn't justify the postage charges from overseas.

You don't have an Australian warranty if you buy things from overseas(It'll be vaild in the country you bought it in)
For example: Tents. Don't expect to get your msr tent sent off, under warranty through your retailer who stocks Msr. You didn't buy it from them, or from the Australian wholesaler, so don't expect them to lose on you, especially because you didn't support thier business.

For me, IN both Australia, and now the UK, I have had people bring assorted gear(mostly tents and clothes) back, who have purchased them from overseas, and expect us/retailer to repair/replace/refund. You didn't buy it from us, why should we look after you, if you're not supporting local business?

It's all about ethics.

Thing is, when you can buy 2 or 3 of those MSR tents overseas for the local price of one then hell... warranties are not a motivating factor any more.

Assuming Tescos isn't taking the piss his profile says he is 17. At 17 the dollar talks and ethics? who the hell cares about ethics if you can't go climbing? Scam, steal, borrow beg and go climbing.

How many local shops push and support local products? How often in most outdooors stores are you likely to get good specialist rockclimbing advice? A pet peeve is the word technical. No I don't care if the rain coat is educated I want one that doesn't leak.

At 17 the dollar talks and ethics? - Didn't understand that, and yes im 17...

Being 17, i don't have a steady income, and i already have to pay for tafe, so its quite hard to support local shops.

Also: I think I've spent hours looking for the best prices on the internet for gear, and RockHardware is one of the best, i can't believe i didn't look at this shop before... it's a lot cheaper than cliffhanger on most products.

Australian retailers need to buy in bulk so they can get competitive prices.

When you are on a tight budget and ultra passionate ethics usually come second! Posting a request for assitance to scam a local shop is pretty bold in anyones world. Seriously consider getting a VCC membership. It will save you at least 10% on every gym entry, the guidebooks are cheaper and the gear from the local shops are cheaper. You will also get a little magazine called Argus once a month for inspiration.

Much like a former climbing mag suggesting ways of making a food shopping trip into Horsham a bit cheaper using dubious ethics?

Stuff em all tesco...get the cheapest deal ya can...even with a discount they are still getting a sale that wouldn't normally get which is the whole point anyway..or is this more about the VCC membership being used wrongly???

If his profile is correct, he's a Queenslander so I'm not sure how much appeal discounts at Vic gyms holds...

I'm sure that when he first posted his Chockstone profile showed his location as Queensland and his name as Ford Henderson but the profile now is different. Strange?

Coming from the UK I was shocked by some of the prices for climbing gear. For example Camp chalk I buy at home for £8 was $28 and that was with a 10% discount!!!
But you can get deals. I got a new style BD pad for $300 which was on par with UK prices.
I don't condone trying to beat the system, but some things seem way to expensive.
