my 2 cents worth..
as a partly colour blind climber, I'm also driven mad at needing constant direction from my belayer..
I'm often missing vital holds that I just didn't see..
I believe the main problem is that most gyms just don't consider this problem when setting. Odd when
you consider the percentage of the male population who are affected.

I think the simplest solutions might be:
a) separate similar colours. e.g: don't put orange/ red/ pink on the same rope..
b) avoid using pastels, use more primary colours that are not going to be easily obscured when
covered in chalk and shoe rubber..
Failing that - the tape idea works - I used his in California recently and it worked reasonably well.. Until
I found a route that used aqua tape next to a blue and dark green one (?!!).. Sigh..
