Totally agree. The obvious distinction is in the impact that placing either has, environmentally and for future climbers. Pretty easy to argue that placing gear has a lesser impact and therefore can be done with less concern for these issues but it is silly to think that gear has no impact and in the end both gear and bolts are part of the same sliding scale that includes chipping, chalk and writing up climbs. We all draw lines around where we think the right path lies but their is no universal truth.
