No volunteer would expect any money. My local brigade recently had a survey to see what kind of return we would like for our efforts. We declined any.

After the Sydney fires, the owner of a house we saved came and gave the brigade a $10k cheque as a thankyou. We didn't expect it, he didn't have to do it but it was a sign of the gratitude he felt for saving his personal belongings. A very nice gesture that was truly appreciated. That $10k bought us an AC so we wouldnt have to sit and swelter in 40 degree heat while on standby, a beer fridge (essential bit of kit) and a new pump. So the next year we were refreshed when we left the station, we could pump more water from pools/dams to save properties better and we were safer, and when we got back there was cold beer waiting. That guy will probably never benefit from the money but we certainly did (the time we volunteered was more productive and enjoyable) and that in turn enabled us to give more back to the community.
