If you want to get really angry read Guy Pearce's article then read Scorcher by Clive Hamilton (also about coal/aluminium/resource industries influence on government).
The coal industry will not go down with a fight. They are currently reinventing themsleves with "clean coal technology" courtersy almost solely of governemnt funding, coal seam methane and gasification of " stranded" deep coal deposits, which can then be converted to diesel.
