Ditto to everything said so far (especially re: the lycra).

Regarding the necessities on a rack, you can probably afford to start leading without cams at least for a while, which will save on expense. Hate to generalise here but most easier graded climbs will take bomber nut & sling placements anyway.

About hitting the grade 20 wall, I'm not sure if it's just me or a common theme in indoor climbing, but I also had a hard time breaking 20 in a gym. There seemed to be a larger gap between 20 and 21 than any other 2 grades, but once it was broken, the other low twenties fell into place too. Keep working at it!

Like everyone else has said, find a damn good leader (in a club if need be) and clean as many climbs as you can, learn to set up belays and take special notice of good placements placed by your leader. Easy graded leads will follow, etc etc.
