There is a vast swag of issues to consider here, however in the mix you should definately look at a low grazing regime by introduced animals and largely intact vegetation remnant structures (Sphagnum Bogs, Alpine Ash forests etc) leading to good river / stream health in the park itself (this obviously declines downstream); introduced fire regimes / mosaics by NPWS plays a part in sedimentation and nutrification factors associated with different reaches of the park's rivers while recreational use would lead to faecal contamination of some creeks / rivers. Roading is perhpas the largest influcing factor in surface water movement in catchments and is often associated with high sediment and nutrient loads. Get in touch with the local CMA and get an "Index of Stream Conditions - ISC" map which you can use to draw conclusions to river health in the alpine area based on the above points. Good luck!
