I'll fess up. WWS and I did a winter ascent via the standard route (can't remember its name) maybe 7 - 8 years ago as part of our 'training' for the Dolomites. We rode our mountain bikes down early one morning, bashed up to the base, climbed, bivied en route, climbed again and topped out, did the canyon descent off to the left (looking at the wall) and rode back out in the dark.
What can I remember - The first couple of pitches provided some very engaging off-width corner climbing - dirty as hell - and a bit too wide for the gear we had - but onwards and upwards! Was there an old manky carrot hidden/camoed by moss?? Can't accurately recall as I was doing lots of these type of things at the time - but take a plate along and when things get grim keep an eye out on the right wall. After that, off-width corner followed by.....offwidth corner and then......off-width corners!
The bivi was non too flash, just parked on some large wedge boulders in an opening of the corner system - I recall some of the boulders actually shifting during the night (code for giving way!) but our attitude adjusters allowed us to laugh the incident off. Found an old hand made tube chock held together with gaffer tape up high - still have it out in the garage.
The canyon descent was fun, straight forward and not too full on - we had to strip pretty much naked though as we had no spare clothes and being winter didn't want too die of hypothermia!
An excellent weekend adventure - We were pretty chuffed at the time by the full on adventure of the whole package deal.
GoUp!
