Hurrah! I agree entirely! I keep meaning to write a ranty letter to one of the mags, but this will do :)

I'm used to climbing on limestone, where obviously chalk doesn't show up too well & I can't understand why you need 50cm long tick marks on orange rock where the chalk shows up like... ummm... white chalk on orange rock ;) Or blue chalk on white Alumnite (i.e. Bulahdelah)!?!?!!!!!

I thought the cover of Rock a couple of months ago was a prime example - the one of the proj at Araps near India - Jeez!!! I'm talking about the sunburst that could probably be seen back at the campsite - or, in fact, in Horsham!

I find that a tiny little dab of chalk on a hard-to-see foothold (i.e. actually on the bit you use), or the crucial point of a handhold works really well - and it comes off when you use it. Mostly though I just try & remember what it looks like.

I have made a point of scrubbing off tick marks on the routes that I get on (probably most annoying for the people who put them there, but I'm sure they'll get over it - or get some glasses).
