The basic theory behind taxation is get as much as you can and then work out how to spend it. If there were less people on the dole we wouldn't pay any less tax, it would just be spent on different things, perhaps a few more subsidies for big business, perhaps a few more missles to kill some poor bastard who didn't have the good fortune to be born in this lucky country. I would much rather my tax dollar went to support people doing artistic pursuits like climbing than building nuclear power stations and subsidising our trade agreements with the US (the financial equivalent of anal rape). I don't have the energy or creativity to do the dole diary and have my chain jerked by Centrelink but I have the upmost respect for anyone that does. People get angry about climbers going on the dole and climbing because they don't have the courage to do it themselves. It's just a bit of self righteousness that makes people feel better about themselves when they have a shit job and don't have the courage to leave it. People love to get angry and strut, and boast about how upstanding they are but really, who cares? I'd rather be climbing than strutting about.
