There are some great short routes at Black Hill, but be real careful of the bolts, it's listed in a couple of the old Rock guides and probably the new Western Districts (Glen?) guide.
I've been involved with replacing some of the hammer-in/ slip-straight-out ones with glue ins. Seriously, there are plenty left, be careful...
Ever climbed slabs? Try Milawa (17)..

From what i know, nick sutter and charlie creese have been fairly prolific in developing the area, as well as the close by cobaw state park. as for individual problems/grades/locations, i thik you'll have to ask either nick or charlie. When the mill was still up and running, there were some photos and some general maps of the boulder clusters for both black hill and cobaws, with one photo of charlie up a stunning looking highball arete.

I heard a whisper that some Black Hill bouldering may be included in the upcoming Melbourne Guide (Tempest & Mentz).... or is this just a viscious rumor...

Rumour is correct James. I have seen full color photo topos, action snaps of Nick on V12's ect that will be in the finished guide. Lots of hard problems have been done apprently. Look for the glue re-enforced holds!

Hey Dodgy, have you seen a copy of the NW Victoria guide? It is up to Version 2.00 and contains all the known climbs but it was produced before the bouldering really took off. So if it's bouldering your after get onto Glenn's back and gee him up a bit :-)

Black Hill is the best developed bouldering area around Melbourne (Hanging Rock is great but is unfortunately out of bounds). Nic Sutter and co have added some brilliant and very difficult boulder problems. Simey and I have photographed most boulders at Black Hill and have started creating the photo topos. Black Hill bouldering will be a major feature of the area in our Melbourne Selected Climbs guide. Glenn

Hey Glenn, long time no see.
What's the story with no bouldering at Hanging Rock? Has it specifically been banned? I can imagine a climbing ban being legitimate and enforced but unsure how anyone could take exception to bouldering on the summit plateau - conceding that it's private land of course.

Steve....it's been a few years! I love the bouldering at Hanging Rock (arguably better than the climbing!) but the owners seem to take a dim view of ANY form of climbing. A few years back I was 'caught' bouldering and told to piss off (my words, not theirs). Okay, it was a high boulder (really high boulder) but no amount of explaining was going to help my case. I went to Camel's Hump for the day instead. Perhaps the VCC Access Officer could take up the bouldering case. Glenn

Is Nic also compiling Cobaws to also be included in the Best Of?

Seconded, the bouldering at Hanging Rock was awesome - it's the only place I've ever visited just to go bouldering .. and this was back in the days when bouldering wasn't a sport.

The Cowbaws. That brings back memories of some very crystaline problems back in the early 1980s. Finger tips still haven't recovered. Typical Central Victorian granite crap and then some. Plenty of rock....lots of big crystals. Has Nic found a half decent bouldering area? I'll give him a call and find out.....

Bouldering may not have been a sport back then, but the boulder problems at Hanging Rock had names before I began climbing back in 1968. People went to HR just to boulder in that era as well.
