hey buddy,
having done the trip every year for the last 5 years have always gone up the Hume - it's 7 hours to the Ski tube. You are better off driving after work the night before and crashing at the shelter at Geehi, then in the morning it's only an hour to the ski tube and the o/snow to Charlotes so you'll be ice climbing by 12. If you have more time sure you can go to Gutherga, but it's further to drive and twice as long to walk in but you save some $'s.
I'll be going up either the second or third weekend of Aug based on the weather, and might even try something different - park at Dead Horse Gap before Thredbo, go up to Kosci, over the main range and into Blue lake and then walk back via Charlotes.
