I've got Biggar's book on the andes which gives brief info on the easy routes and access to most popular peaks (can scan/copy the relevant pages if you don't have it). The walk in time is usually a bit under done.
If I remember the names correctly, went to a spot a bit further down the road (Banos Morales) a year ago to climb Loma Larga 5400 for acclimitisation. We were able to arrange mules at the trail head but there wasn't much else there.
A thought James, if you have limited time I'd suggest going to the Cordillera Blanca from Huaraz in Peru instead (assuming you can rustle up a partner etc). The peaks are prettier, you should get more climbing in (shorter walk ins), everythings cheaper, the culture is much more different (interesting?) etc etc. Best mid year though. Food for thought. My opinion only.
