No-one's saying that leading indoors is the same to leading outdoors. However, it does benefit someone wanting to learn to lead outdoors. To use your euphemisms - playing indoor soccer would help out when they finally get out on the field or playing regular touch footy would teach you some of the skills you need to know for getting out the for the real game.

It's not the same but it's closer than top roping and it does teach you some skills and train your mindset.

Myself, I personally prefer to lead every time I'm in a gym as I enjoy it more. I don't like the rope going above me and sometimes pulling me off.
