i was there last year and there was not a single car available for hire on the entire island between christmas and about a week into january. don't expect to just turn up and get one.

there's a small cheapo car rental place in launceston i ended up getting a bomb from, but it still cost $60 (50?) a day because it was the only thing available, plus they charged me an extra day without telling me for bringing it back after 5 (they just ran it through the machine with my card number they had as a deposit), which i wasn't overly impressed with.

so yes organise in advance if its going to be a busy period and don't expect any cheapos because when they sell out they all go full price.

i was in a similar position re being in hobart and flying out of launceston, i solved that by hitching across the island and driving back, worked out alright in the end ;)
