You got me curious about ‘lighting fires in parks’ in Victoria. So I went and looked up the National Parks (Park) Regulations 2003. (just for a bit of exciting reading)

Regulation 25(1) specifies that: A person must not light or maintain a fire in a park.
Penalty: 20 penalty units.

…however a person may light a fire in a park (during a period when it is permitted) in a public fireplace, a designated area or ‘on a vessel in an area of the park that is seaward of the low water mark’.
A person who lights or maintains a fire must ensure that the ground and airspace within 3 metres of the fire are clear of flammable material.
A person who has lit or who has been left in charge of a fire must extinguish the fire immediately at the request of an authorised officer or member of the police force or before leaving the place of the fire.

There are some penalties associated with breaching these regulations. That got me thinking – are employees of Parks Victoria able to issue ‘on the spot fines’?
