I'll start up a new topic after our near miss on the weekend. Yep, the temps were high and the wind was strong - and yet another fire has erupted in the Grampians. This time it was a spot fire (lightening?) that appeared around 10am this morning on the Emu Foot Track, which is the access to Eureka Walls, Lost World, Gondwanaland in the Victoria Ranges. We smelt the smoke at the carpark and decided to bail - and were met with a posse of fast moving fire trucks, planes and rangers coming the other direction. According to the the DSE page, this fire has been contained at 6pm tonight

So, keep your eyes out and report anything that looks suss. The place is tinder dry...

DSE media release on bushfires today includes this:
...and a nine hectare fire at the Grampians, approximately 10 kilometres southeast of Cherrypool is contained (meaning that the spread of the fire has been halted even though it may still be burning within control lines)...

They did actually think we had started it and were trying to run away! They wrote down our rego and
names and asked stern questions. We were just bummed that our days climbing was ruined - we had just
driven all the way from Bundaleer, and we had to turn around and drive back again.

Speaking of fires there looked to be a rather large one burning north? of Araps on Sunday. Made for some interesting viewing as the wind whipped the smoke about, anyone have any details?
