Hey Duncan,

I used to have a 350D and used to own the Canon 10-22mm. Its not that fast but produces some great photos and its pretty much the only thing you're going to get in that focal length (equv to 16-35 in 35mm format). You should be able to get it for about $900ish new on ebay from Hong Kong or somewhere.

I've also heard really good reviews about the Tamron 18-50mm f2.8. I looked into it myself before upgrading to a 5D. Its quite small and compact, though the autofocus isn't as quick as the canon lenses, but I doubt that will matter that much. Given its compact size, its a great travel combo and also something that isn't too bulky in your climbing bag - thats my main gripe with the 5D - it weighs a ton and its big, but it also has many pros that outway these cons.

Otherwise in terms of primes, Canon makes a 24mm f2.8 which i've borrowed for a bit and is great too, but still may not be wide enough for you plus you can get the Tammy 18-50mm f2.8 (though the prime piccy quality is better).

I'd avoid getting the canon 16-35mm or 17-40mm. They're great lenses but given the offerings from Tamron, I'm not sure if they're worth the extra money for you.

I guess in the end it depends how wide you want to go. I'd prolly recommend the 10-22mm and then you still have the 35mm where as with the 18-50mm you get the overlap.
