I was at Weribee Gorge on Saturday, a beginner was leading a grade 10 on preplaced gear. Her 'instructor/Boyfriend' decided to take her off belay when she was halfway up the climb. We were left perplexed wondering what he was doing as she hung on pressed into the wall for a few minutes.... The answer: He needed to get his mosquito repellant. Later I overheard the boyfriend telling her off for belaying too far back from the wall in the shade, reminding her that when she was climbing he stood in the sun getting bitten by misquitos... he failed to mention him taking her off belay to get repellant. It's hard to teach someone when your example is so poor.
