Self belay setup - Jumars & Clove Hitch 30-Aug-2007 At 8:55:08 AM Doc

Hi all,
I've been out a Werribee gorge the past two days with a small group of 'at risk' kids. All having a great experience.
While there on Tuesday an older gentleman was also at the crag climbing alone on a self belay set up. It consisted of two jumas attached to the rope conected to his harness via medium lenghts of cord. Is this normal? There was no other attachment to the rope. what frightened me most however was his set up! His rope was clove hitched around a single anchor point! To change from one climb to another, once at the top, he left the rope attached to his anchor and then went around a near by tree....therefore changing the angle of his top rope. Now before anyone asks, no I didnt speak to him. There was no question he could climb very well and would probably not fall, but it all seemed a bit extreme to me. Is this the norm with those wishing to self belay???
