There's more theories on caffeine too - certainly it gives an energy spike - this is well documented, and when used DURING an event, seems not to have the same diuretic effect as when it is taken out of event (anecdotal evidence from fellow athletes, not sure of the reason). Coke for example has been quoted as being "the best sports drink in the world".
After having done lots of endurance races and getting a lot more in tune with how my body works best, I would CERTAINLY be dragging a bidon of coke up multi pitch routes.
