Great post Fatboy - that is one of the theories of the cause of hyponatremia (HN), though still under debate. According to Tim Noakes and others, normal mechanisms that would prevent the situation you described above from happening (such as diarrhoea) don't appear to work - although this still needs to be shown and proven with some research. According to Doug Hiller (dr) and co from the Hawaii Ironman there are many reports of low sodium levels but they stress that these are from DEhydration and not OVERhydration. Hawley and Burke further report that these mechanisms both require the right people (ie, people with poor fluid regulation) to be under the right cirumstances (ie, consumption of large amounts of low sodium fluid) in order to determine which is in fact the most valid cause of HN. It's for this reason, they say, that HN is quite rare.

Research has also shown that even if you force yourself to consume large volumes of water, this will not restore your fluid balance once dehydrated UNTIL sodium losses are replaced.
