Me and a mate tried climbing there a couple of years ago but got chased out by the weather without getting anything done. The weather is probably worse in the Darrans than anywhere else in NZ which is really saying something. We did go in January which apparently sucks badly weatherwise...Dec or perhaps late Feb on is supposed to be better according to the locals. That said, the Homer hut regulars (including kiwiJC) are a very welcoming bunch so you can still have a good time any time, and the area itself is just incredible for tramping if you don't mind dealing with a the odd storm coming off the Southern ocean. I will definitely go back.
