As the new climbing wall has gone up at my old school, walls, overhangs and corners have been erected and bolt places secured. As a relative noob to indoor bolting specs, I've got no idea what the distances are supposed to be but I'm foreseeing a fair bit of deck-hitting when lead climbing with the current spacing...

Is there somewhere to go for the info or does anyone know how far from ground to bolt 1, then bolt 1-2 etc?? The wall is approx 8m high.

On an 8m wall i'd be putting one every metre starting at 2m. I have no idea what the official gym policy
is. The more bolts the better, as different set routes can have cruxes in different places, and you need to
have options on where to clip from. You don't have to hang draws of every bolt, but having the option of
switching between bolts when you set a new route is required!

Hmm, this is a worry cos I think there are only 3/4 bolts total from ground to top and the gap between 1 and 2 is rather larger than 1m... It's also a concern because the majority of climbers will be young students who quite possibly are learning to lead / lead belay.

kids learning to lead on an 8m wall with 3/4 bolts? how about a backup top rope, helmets, 2ft gym mats & a healthy insurance policy... but that would take the fun out of it wouldn't it.

bolts close together after the first would be pretty important. sounds like you don't have the same freedom to let people take their own risks & the chances of someone doing in an ankle or landing on someone's head sounds well within possibility.

but look up specs that are in some way "official" or accepted practise. otherwise whoever is putting it up would be pretty open to liability.

Yea but thats only for the overhang walls, the "official" lead wall has many quite close to each other, which is where the youngins would be! dave's just being lazy and hasn't finished putting them up yet... !
