wallwombat, I use BD rages (the old venoms) and love them, so you'll find the venom's great. You can't really go too wrong with BD gear, I have found it really good. For crampons i use BD sabertooth's (teeth, lol), and my boots are Lowa Civieta extreme's (plastics). these all serve me well in NZ for pretty much anything I tackle :) As for boots though, depending on what you are doing, a stiff pair of leather crampon compatible boots would do for summer..something like the Sportiva lhotse's (I don't know the K3's). But like the others here have said it also depends on what you will be doing :) If you are going to be getting into harder stuff later with more experience, I recccomend getting the good gear for that straight up (this is what I did)... while it will be an overkill early on, you won't have to buy more gear again when you build up :) Hope this helps.
