Well Ghost, it's a pretty good conversation starter.

I for one am thrilled at the idea that we can help save orang utangs - or even orang utans - by going out and buying monster big, f----off, petrol guzzling, pedestrian squashing, 4WDs.

For those 'out of the loop' so to speak. Ross Floyed (the guy in this ad) owns one of Melbourne's biggest
climbing gyms (Hard Rock). He has employed many people on this board over the years!

However, the folks at Hard Rock actually do lots of work for orang utans. Hats off to them for that.

Nope, just spotted it whilst flicking through Monthly mag in the loo. To get an idea of the demogrpahic for
this mag, the previous page was an ad for Maserati (Power corrupts, absolute power is kind of neat), the
next page was an ad for million dollar apartments on St Kilda Rd (17 serious show-stopping apartments
for people who know the difference)

So does the owner of Hard Rock think that he will satisfy the appetite of the kid's birthday parties and regulars that would make up the majority of his income, or his he trying to distance himself from those members of the climbing community?

As Lionel Hutz (Attorney at Law) said in the classic 'All you can eat' Simpsons episode - 'I'm confused'.

The mag is actually quite good. Very left-wing, anti-howard/bush. Lots of political essays and stuff about
society, culture ect. Lots of opinion pieces that don't get a look in when it comes to Australia's
'mainstream press'. Current issue has a feature on Wendy Deng's control over Rupurt Murdoch. (i wonder
why that didn't make it into the herlad sun?)

im also confused, is this a sponsership thing or just a very expensive ad involving land rover?
Considering that anyone 'out of the loop' will have absolutely no idea about what Hardrock is. hence what is the point?!?! lol

Dude - I think the ad is for landrover. Presumably they are trying to get some positive spin out of a disco being the vehicle of choice for successful (?) outdoorsy type business ... maybe the hard rock bloke got a discount on his car out of it

I think that ad is everything that is wrong with the broader community's view of rock climbing. But call me synical.

It is part of Land Rovers current advertising campaign, where they feature successful business people
and their use of the car. Previous people include famous chefs, wine makers ect. Im sure some money/
product changed hands. The small copy down the bottom of the ad (unreadable) explains a lot more.

Not sure what you mean , Cruze .
The ad seems to be equating rc with 'SUCCESS'.
vsv about up to 1989, when rc was asssociated with 'fanatics' , rat-race-drop-outs , weirdo-greenies , and the odd few weekend-warrior-mums-and-dads.

'SUCCESS' is good, yeah ? I think this sort of image provides an excellent smoke-screen for climbers to return to the ' we can do what we want out here ' attitude , because the ' mainstream' will assume all is 'nice' on the fringe of society.
