Facing and overcoming fear is half the game of climbing, just as much as the fitness /technique / strenght part. See how many people list a top rope climb as their favorite climbing experince. That being said, the most important part is to honestly report how a climb was done. If you want to go to this length to lead a climb, do it. If your happy to top rope, do that. I think there are more contirived acts in climbing than using a fixed rope for protection. Some of the differences between styles of leading seem a bit over the top >>too me<<. (eg red points vs whatever other colurs exist.) But i'm happy to acknowldge they mean things to other people.
