I seem to recall hearing on the radio very recently about increased fuel reduction burning being scheduled for the whole of the state (Nation?) after an analysis report was published over the bush fires in the northeast/Canberra earlier this year. From what I remember of the gossip floating about at the time of the fires "they" were indicating that a lack of fuel reduction burning may have contributed to the fires, and hinted that an unwillingness to undertake such controlled burns in the name of conservation was actually rather counterproductive.

Not that I know anything about it, and I haven't seen the area Neil indicates - so take those comments with a grain of salt. But, as I understand it (and I could well be wrong) forests love having their undergrowth cleared out, and I'd rather get charcoal on my approach shoes now than have the whole of the Gramps go up over a hot windy day in summer, when some careless touron decides to drop a cancer stick out the window of their road maggot (motor home).
