It's just as unnecessary indoors as outdoors. There is usually enough chalk caked onto the indoor holds from previous chalk users to allow a good coating to form on your own hands without needing to use your chalk bag. There is also the other issue of the amount of excess chalk floating around the air inside the gym, I'm have no idea if breathing in chalk is harmful, but I'd rather not find out. From memory, in the UK they have banned loose chalk in the gyms. Sure, use chalk if you must but there is no need to throw it about as if you're coating a pastry board with flour.
