i think your friend has to respect the fact he's not doing the first ascent, and the style in which its been done has to be respected. if a rivet ladder is dodgy, replace it with rivets so as to not take away from the FA. i think its notgood style to add bolts for free climbing because thats bringing it down to your level. in the next 100 years someone will be able to do it so if you cant just leave it. theres plenty of other climbing out there to be done first.

if its going to be done in good style and really add something to the crag/community then go for it but think long and hard before you change the nature of the route. u cant make the decision for other people that they cant repeat it on aid.
