Yes Andy a little short,

The question was more out off interest as I already own quite a substantial rack. I also though it might be an interesting discussion.

What you say is valid, there are risks involved. It is also you prerogative not to use hired gear.

I find it it interesting that you can high climbing gear and I actually phoned the Katoomba Adventure Centre just to find out the deal. All there gear is logged, 40% of applicants fail to hire gear coz they can't answer the questions relating to climbing and yes they do rely on honesty from clients. Wait for it, they have insurance.

Personally I find hiring a rope just a little scary, but a rack wether it be sport or trad, I would be willing to take the risk.
