I think it's pretty important to have lots of experience cleaning after a leader before you start leading yourself.

I cleaned around 1000m of rock before leading, and then had a bit of practise setting up belay anchors on the ground too. That might seem a bit much but placing bomber pro is second nature now, and being a leader doesn't just mean you go up first - it also means you need to be prepared for unexpected situations and know how to deal with them cos your seconder may be relying on you.
