I generally agree with all points except I would say as good practice always tie knots in the end of ropes before abseiling. I once met someone who broke their ankle doing a 17m abseil off the Omega Block, Camels Hump (no mid point on rope!).

Some other tips:
*don't get distracted half way through an important process such as tieing in knots or harness.
*avoid only having one piece of protection between you and a sizable fall, particularly on the crux.
*seat all protection in firmly and in direction of fall. (sort of covered by one of the points)
*check that the rock you are placing gear into is solid. Also check bolts. Don't proceed if you are not satisfied.
*if you do bail on a climb don't scimp it on the gear. Use whatever is necessary and it is usually better to rap off a biner rather than a bare sling. Carry an old biner, say on your nut key, that can be sacrificed.
