Hi there BigMike - it's Spanky here, not rokmonkee....

re: whether to fib to your mom... I personally feel extremely annoyed when my loved ones - parents, friends, extended family - freak out about what I choose to do (particularly when their vantage point is on a couch in front of the television!!). I have told them that my personal belief is nothing can come into existence without having first being thought of by someone, and that them worrying about various scenarios is just making bad juju for me in the universe. I have told them that their options are - a) wish me well and envision me being successful and safe and having an awesome time doing what I love, living my own life or b) be left in the dark about what I'm doing, maintaining the cloak of mystery between myself and the Bad Worry Juju. It does not help one's state of mind to know that a person is freaking out about what you're doing and if they can't control their thoughts (when they can't control you!), then I think it's better they not know. You could do it by not fibbing to her, but just not tell her what exactly you're doing... that's your choice as an adult, and perhaps she would rather not know. Of course all the worry comes from a place of care and concern but it is pointless, misplaced, counterproductive energy. Your end of the bargain is to do your absolute best on the mountain and be as prepared as you can be, and don't dial in to her worry since I believe that makes a short-circuit.... two people thinking the same thing at the same time.... uh-oh...
