The few times I have been climbing in Mt Cook the airfares have always been reasonable though it totally depends on how many other people want to go to where you want to go on a particular day and also how many people want to use the return flight. Could be cheap could be expensive.

If you book bus tickets a long time in advance Intercity used to give you 50% off. Don't know if this is still the case I havent been in a couple yrs. There was another company that went to Mt Cook and you could book a $35 ticket within two days of departure if seats available.

Buy food in Christchurch. There are a couple big supermarkets. You can buy basic provisions (pasta/noodles/meat/sausages/milk/bread etc) in Mt Cook. Its more expensive.
