Am I a fatty? 15-Sep-2006 At 4:16:51 PM HC

Hi Bluey,

The use of calipers to calculate body fat is a technique fraught with danger and requires someone who knows what they are doing and with plenty of practice. Your average trainer at your average gym probably isn't particularly adept. At 28% for a girl you would be carrying at the very least a potty tummy and be aware that you aren't at your most ideal weight. And then it depends on if your height measurement and dead (scale) weight was correct as well. Then there are many different ways of calculating body fat and if it was such an exact science then why would there be so many ways of doing it?

Don't take it to heart. (20% is about ideal, and 15% if you want to see your abdominals)

You only convert what you don't use up to fat. So if you are burning as much as you are eating you won't create more fat to store. If you are burning up more than you consume you will burn fat, although if you are burning it too fast you will actual start to poach muscle instead of fat.

If you are a rock climber I'd seriously doubt that you have a serious weight problem. Especially if you fall into a healthy BMI. I don't. But I carry a lot of muscle for my size (even as a chick :-) )
