I understand what has been said above re; 'sussing people out' although in my opinion this will occur less and less in the future especially in the open catagories and juniors due to the fact that these climbers need to compete in national and state title events if they are to have any hope climbing in a world cup or oceania event. Regardless of who may / may not be competing these guys need to compete to progress their comp climbing.
My main gripe with the late fee was for the competitors who enter purely for the fun of it.
I agree with wyt91t in that their is strong need for novice catagories and even a 'c' grade. This will allow more competitors to enter and have a chance against people of respective ability.
I understand and always have that gyms who hold comps lose money, its that simple. However recouping some of that loss by charging a $100 late fee is not the way to go imo. As i said previously $25 would be fair and maybe even some form of penalty in the comp (one hold penalty etc).
