Don't get me wrong - I agree with you wholeheartedly. I just think that a novice leader can find things turning pear-shaped very quickly when pushing the grades on 10 meter routes with bad landings. Do short routes by all means for the reasons you've identified, but people should be very careful to keep an eye on just how close the ground is and what might happen if they hit it!
