I think how smoking effects the individual is all down to that persons physical make up and a certain amount of 'luck'. I known a guy who smoked 20 a day and ran ultra marathons, I known quite a few guys who climb 30+ who smoked loads. Everyone (normally those who smoke!) who knows some guy in his 80's who's smoked all his life and is 'fine'.
Conversely, there are some poor sods who smoked for not 'that' long and get lung/throat whatever cancer in their early 30's and then theres the cases of those who didn't smoke at all (Christophers Reeve's missus for example) getting lung cancer.
There is a wealth of scientific proof that shows us smoking is bad for your health and I don't think anyone would disagree with that - It is a matter of whether you choose to ignore this and chance your body and your luck as to how it will effect you now or later on in life.
I don't have a problem with or being around smokers (being an ex smoker) - The little bit of crap i get from second hand smoke doesn't bother me compared to the amount crap I breathe in daily living in the City. And booze is just as damaging to health and to other people, just in different ways. Its just that it is acceptable to see cigarettes as the boogeyman these days. I guess it will be a long time before we see pictures of chirroded livers or a DUI car-wrecks on a beer bottles.
