I totally agree with you on that point Jac (seconding). I think what i was trying to say is, after seconding for a considerable time you can then do your apprenticeship or leading course, but you are still a beginner. Until you have proven yourself to be a safe and competent leader (under many circumstances and different climbs) over a reasonable period of time you are a beginner. As an interesting aside i have an acquaintance who will not let someone belay (second) him unless that person has lead before - safe practice, but it kinda makes it hard for some to get into either of the aforementioned paths.
