Most University clubs have some sort of proficiency testing. It may take the form of an external test or a long apprenticeship and a climbing log book / skills proficiency checklist. But the age-old motto of climbing states "there is no substitute for experience", this is what is important here. I know in our club there are past members who finished uni ten years ago and still help out and teach current members. One can do one zillion courses and still get the shakes on a single pitch 14. How did all of you learn to lead ? In my circle i only know one person who was first taught to lead by an instructor.

Your particular incident does not sound good. I guess we all have to start somewhere, but it would be better to learn from/with someone who is more experienced. Hopefully the organising body can shed some light on this or rectify the situation.
