woops, patto.. I meant the belayer holds the rope in position, but doesn't have to actually put any weight on the rope...
To feed rope quickly, just use the method described in the Petzl pamphlet that comes with the grigri.
Out of interest, I have bolted a few big routes rapping with my Gri-Gri on an 8.5mm static rope (it's a 100metre static, so I have gone thin to save weight). It slips a bit occasionally, just have to be a little careful.... now I've ripped the sheath at 40metres I'm going back to thicker ropes, and feeling much safer.
I'll be quite happy to use an ATC or similar in the gym. I think I do less "dogging" in the gym, as most of the routes are pumpers rather than bouldery routes, so there's not as much hanging on the bolts trying to figure out the tricks.
