This is not to defend climbers who pass by fellow climbers in need of help. It's rather to try to warn other, well meaning climbers not to fall into the same trap.
Consider: It wasn't just the guy with two artificial legs who passed the injured climber by. There were heaps of other people who just kept on trekking. Why?
Theres good evidence from psychological research, that if you have an accident, the more people who are around, the less likely it is that anyone will care. Everyone will pass the buck, and think "someone else will surely be a) better equiped, b) have more time, c) more training etc." This is why people can get raped or mugged in city centres and on highways, in broad daylight with people watching. And noone helping.
So if you ever get injured, you really only want one person to pass by, 'cause he or she will realise that if he/she doesn't help, then no one will.
I guess the moral of the story is: When someone needs help, they need YOUR help, no matter how many other people are around. |
