This appears to be the evolution of climbing. When I mentioned improving standards I mean't at the top end rather than the bottom- Younger, stronger and bolder climbers seek to improve upon the style and methods of their predecessors whose dodgy tactics were used to bring the route within the standard of the time. Unfortunately, in seeing the tactics used by the old school, less-talented climbers consider these methods as an acceptable means to get up the route and begin to use them. Which goes to show how the influence trickles down and how in this instance I can understand where the OP is coming in that if it becomes accetable to squeeze routes in this way, whats to stop many others adopting the same style.

And I don't think 'donkey lines' have ever become acceptable. ;)
