googling 'environmental nut placement' yields some interesting results.

The ENP was a concept pushed by some Brits climbing in Spain. I'm probably not doing it justice but the basic idea was that you drill a hole and glue in a metal tube with a specially shaped lip that would take a #3 rock. The protection was placed and removed in the same manner as trad gear but with less visual impact than a bolt.

Some of the UK climbing forums may shed more light on it but I remember the debate at the time being pretty lively. The tradsters hated the ENP for being a drilled and glued artificial placement that ruined the adventure of the climbing. The boltsters hated the ENP coz they were impossible to find once some weathering took place, required you to carry a rack of #3 rocks and were very weak compared to bolts.

Dunno if people still do it, but it seemed like a very daft idea to me. Environmental nut protection should be caled a crack. Anything involving drills and glue should be called a stainless steel bolt.
