CRUX Magazine – call for content + win free stuff! 3-May-2006 At 7:38:30 PM cruxmag

The rumours are true. After much work behind the scenes a group of dedicated climbers have decided to launch a new Australian/NZ printed climbing magazine – CRUX Climbing!

People felt it was time for a new way of expressing our passion for the sport, away from the internet forums, but still keeping the same sense of community input.

Crux is a collaborative approach to magazine making. We have no formal office or staff and our many article and photo editors are located throughout Australia. Our aim is to publish an interesting and entertaining magazine that contains articles from every corner of the Australian climbing scene - no matter what the grade or ‘fame’ of people involved. It should be a snapshot of the current diverse nature of our sport - warts and all. Each issue is to be the result of many people who work together to create the magazine. Climbing is our passion, and this enthusiasm will reflect in the content of the magazine. Final text of all articles and news stories will be approved by the author before publication. All correspondence and submissions to the magazine, including photography, will be via email. Most of all we want to share the incredible energy that climbers have for their chosen pursuit by creating a magazine for the people, by the people. Amen.

In preference we publish material suited to an Australian/NZ audience - however we will happily publish articles from the rest of the world if they are relevant to a wider audience. Our magazine structure is informal. We aim to publish material of almost any form providing it entertains or educates our readers to some degree. Examples of such material could be - interviews, cartoons, crag profiles, gossip columns, trip reports, Q&A, training tips, news, quotes, photo essays, crosswords, ethics expose, book reviews, gear surveys, historical research, paintings, trad vs sport, fictional short stories or any other form of creative writing or image making. Providing it has some reference to the pursuit of climbing then we will be interested in publishing it. The more quirky the better.

We strive to give all Australian/NZ climbing communities a voice in our magazine. Information about new crag developments, hard ticks, rebolting and other local community gossip is needed for every State and Territory. Several pages are allocated for hyping up new routes with photos, topos and mini articles.

At CRUX we aim to have several regular columns from various members of the
climbing community. These columns could be of special interest (for instance - Climbing Photography) or just a place for someone to spout controversial viewpoints. We would love to give some of the internet icons a chance to get ‘in print’. Columnists do not have to be identifiable and can remain anonymous - to our editorial team and to the readers. If you feel you have something strong to say, and are willing to write a regular column then get in touch with our editor. (editor@cruxmag.com.au).

We won’t be publishing letters praising our magazine. However, we will publish letters addressed to the rest of the Australian climbing community. If you want something put into the ‘public eye’ and the internet forums just don’t do it for you then please email your (hopefully) controversial message to (letters@cruxmag.com.au ). You must write to us using your real name, and avoid malicious slander or overly offensive content. It will be up to the editors to decide if it goes to print. Letters will be published in their entirety so try and limit them to under 100 words. Letters emailed to the editor of CRUX will not be printed in the Letters section of the magazine without prior approval by the author.

We love good photography. We want to publish the most imaginative, creative and awe-inspiring images that we can source. Our dedicated photographic editorial team has a passion for photography and is keen to work with contributors to get the best results we can. We don’t care if the original camera format was film or digital. If the photo has great content and shows enthralling action then we will be keen to publish it. Photo essays, portraits, landscapes, sequences, drawings, cartoons and experimental ‘art’ images are also greatly desired by our magazine. Providing they fit into a broad definition of climbing they are suitable for CRUX. Full specifications for photography is available in the Contributors Guidelines document. If you have any questions about suitable content then email our photo editor Josh Caple at (photos@cruxmag.com.au)

Whilst we get this magazine up and running there will be NO payments for any material submitted. All CRUX staff members are working voluntarily, at great expense to their real jobs, to make this magazine become a viable part of the Australian climbing community. There is no rich investor for this project so we will require a few issues to build some capital to pay contributors. Our long term aim is to eventually pay each contributor for their work. In the meantime we are running a competition so that every contributor who gets published has a chance of winning climbing equipment as a small thank you for their greatly appreciated work. Prizes include $200 worth of Woodie Worx climbing holds, a brand spanking Tendon Master 9.7mm 50m rope courtesy of Climbinganchors.com, World Climbing: Images From The Edge photo book from Simon Carter and a climbing clothing outfit from Makalu Equipment. Your contribution will help to establish a climbing magazine that truly represents the Australian climbing community.

Our very competitive advertising rates can be discussed with Belinda, our friendly advertising manager at (advertising@cruxmag.com.au)

All staff are volunteer and work on the magazine from their own homes and offices throughout Australia. The wonders of the internet have created a web based virtual office environment where collaboration is paramount. If you would like to help with the day to day running and editing of this magazine then email our editor at (editor@cruxmag.com.au)

Deadline for contributions to issue #1 is May 31. Expect to see the first copy on the shelves in late July.

Thank you for your time. Now get out there and start writing, shooting or just making news by climbing hard!

…From the crew of Crux Climbing – the main players are Simon Murry, Josh Caple, Neil Monteith, Adam Bramwell, Simon Carter + a multitude of ever helpful photo and article editors.
