He may as well have been dodging trains or jumping speeding cars. At some point one of his stunts was going to go wrong. It was inevitable. Yes, he applied considerable skill and strength in his exploits, but who can honestly say they could see him living to a ripe age if he had not died when he did?
If we were all as reckless as he was, there would be carnage on every cliff, every day. Families would be constantly grieving; rescue and hospital staff would be overloaded and traumatised. Our society’s resources would go into paying for rehabilitation services and coroner’s investigations.
What did his stunts contribute? What path were they leading us down that, if we pursued it, would enhance our lives? He was not a pioneer of aviation or space travel. These things have ultimately enhanced our lives greatly. I think he wasted his skills and strengths on trivial dare-devil stunts and agree with Simey that it generally cheapens climbing as a reputable sport.
