I quite like abseiling... it's definitely the best way to get to the bottom, I wouldn't consider walking down unless I had to. That way you can also check out the climb and notice all the holds you hadn't seen on the way up.
I think it's just a matter of getting used to it, like spicy food, it burns at first but then you don't taste anything anymore. If you want to get over your fear (or spicy food), you should abseil off high cliffs (or eat really spicy stuff) a few times. Canyoning probably helps as the abseils can be technical, jumping in water from 10m also helps if you don't hurt yourself (still didn't get used to that tho).
That said, I'm still scared when I lead and that the last draw is below my feet.
