I wouldn't even call his behaviour that reckless. Risky sure - but Chockstone members know about risk and risk mitigation, and he did too. I think his death was all the more sad because of his achievements.

Agreed. Perhaps criticism comes from people don't understand what he did and why he did it. If you want to learn a bit more about him, I suggest: Go watch Masters of Stone 5, then read an Outside Magazine article on him: http://outside.away.com/magazine/0499/9904terminal.html
