Hi Richard,

Good point. I'm going to take that up at a board level and see where the discussion heads.

I do know the Australian Sport Commission normally wants a sport to have 5,000 members minimum to officially recognise the sport. They have however agreed to consider us as is (with approx. 500 members) as long as we have a plan to reach the 5,000 over the next few years.

One proposal being discussed at the moment is for a $1 supporters type of member (although possibly not an actual member due to constitutional reasons). The idea would be when you joined or renewed your membership at your local participating climbing gym that they gave you the option of coughing up an extra $1 to support competition climbing and becoming an official SCA supporter. I guess this is similar to what you suggest with VCC and Sydney Rockies, but with gyms as the focus.

On another note we have been approached by the Sydney Olympic Park Authority to think about the feasibility of building a permanent, world-cup class, outdoors climbing wall. Early days yet, but we are definately hoping for a world cup round in australia within the next few years.

Nick...
